Overview
"London goes beyond any boundary or convention. It contains every wish or word ever spoken, every action or gesture ever made, every harsh or noble statement ever expressed. It is illimitable. It is Infinite London." - Peter Ackroyd, London: The Biography (2000)
London is one of the most diverse, multi-ethnic and historic cities in the world. Up to 14 million people call the greater London area home and they are not the only ones. The streets are dark with something more than the night. Once you look beneath the surface of the city you soon realize that the streets are mean and life is fragile. London is a city of contrast, tensions and secrets all grinding against each other to prop up the powers that really control it. From the high flying city traders, government ministers and footballers that all seek to indulge every vice they can without being caught in the press through to the disenfranchised.
At the other end of the spectrum sit the poor, the uneducated and the illegal immigrants that huddle in the outer fringes of the city scratching out a living and waiting for the time they can make enough money to emulate their vice riddled heroes. In the middle there are those that by design or by ignorance support the upper echelons and exploit the rest. They are the normal, middle classes who only worry about where the mortgage rates are going, if they can afford that latest gadget and scurrying around what they consider the safe areas near their homes constantly in fear that someone or something is looking to take what they have worked so hard for. Also in this middle tier there sit those that make fortunes from exploiting everyone else. They are the less than honest business men and the out and out criminal element that feed the vices of those at the top and drip feed dreams to the underclasses.
The police do what they can to keep the streets quiet but undermanned and underpaid they don’t really care to try to hard, after all it is much more rewarding to look the other way than to be a hero. But something keeps these tensions in check. For all the potential cracks in its foundations somehow the city still operates and by certain measures prospers. There are groups in the shadows with deep held interests in keeping the city stable and snuffing out dissent and questions before they uncover anything that will rock the boat. Because some things thrive in the absence of light and because sometimes it is better not to know what is really going on. Yet down these mean and dark streets sometimes there walk people that are not themselves mean and dark, they are neither tarnished nor afraid. They want to reclaim their city for those people they see as the victims. Of course these people are very rare but perhaps not as rare as some would have us believe.
